By Firefighter / EMT-B David Morris
July 4, 2010

During the course of the July 4th weekend, the firefighters from the Fightin' Four remained active running numerous calls for service. The weekend started on Friday evening, when Boat 4 (Chief 4B Mercure), Engine 43 (Capt. Raley) and Brush 4 (Chief Raley) headed to St. Mary's College to stand by for their annual River Concert Series and Fireworks.
Shortly after arriving, a call for a syncopal episode was put out behind townhouse "D." The crew from 43, who was in the area, started that way to provide manpower for the ambulance. After arriving, EMT's from 43 and Ambulance 498 assisted the patient, and 498 departed priority 2 to SMH. While 43 was assisting the ambulance, the fill in was alerted to Company 3. Units from Companies 9, 7, 83, 3 and 79 were all battling a house fire in Company 9's first due. Engine 44 (Capt. Hawkins) responded shortly after. The crew stayed at Company 3 for approximately two hours and ran no calls.
After returning to the college, the crew watched the fireworks display. After the fireworks display was over and the crew began departing, Boat 4 alerted Brush 4 (FF/EMT Morris) to the area of the dock where the fireworks were being shot for a marsh fire. Brush 4 responded through the heavy traffic that was leaving the college, but was soon returned to service after Boat 4 was able to successfully extinguish the fire. All units returned to service without further incident for the night.
Saturday morning started out with Boat 4 running a call to Piney Point for the boat in distress. Shortly after launching, the boat was placed in service. At 0059 Sunday morning, the personal injury accident was dispatched in the area of the Ridge Transfer Station. Chief 4 was first arriving, advising the accident would actually be at Clarke Hilltop Lane and Point Lookout Road, less than a mile from the firehouse. Rescue Engine 42 (Chief 4A Raley), Engine 43 (Chief 4B Mercure), Engine 141 and Ambulances 497 and 388 all made the response. The crew from the rescue engine and engine began patient care while waiting for the ambulances, and Engine 141 arrived and also assisted with packaging the patient. After clearing the roadway and securing the vehicles, the box was placed in service and all units returned.
One minute past the noon hour on Sunday, the Fightin Four was alerted to Point Lookout Road @ Three Notch Rd for the motor vehicle accident. Rescue Engine 42 (Capt. Hawkins), Engine 43 (Chief 4B Mercure), Engine 141, Ambulance 497, Chief 4 (Raley) and Medic 391 all made the response. Chief 4 was first arriving, advising the accident would actually be at the intersection of Wynne Rd and Point Lookout Rd. Chief 4 also advised that a door pop would needed, and the crew from the rescue engine completed the door pop in three minutes. After the door pop was completed, the crew from the rescue engine and engine removed the patient from the vehicle. After packaging and loading the patient, Ambulance 497 went en route to SMH priority 2 and met the medic unit en route.
Very shortly after units were in quarters, the brush fire was alerted on Rodo Beach Road. Brush 4 (Capt. Raley), Tanker 4 (FF Combs), Jeep 4 and Chief's 4 (Raley) and 4B (Mercure) all responded. Both chief's arrived together advising of a moderate sized brush fire. Brush 4 and Jeep 4 arrived together and made a quick stop on the fire. Tanker 4 arrived and supplied water to both brush units. Engine 44 was special called to assist with foam operations. After the fire was out, units mopped up and returned to service.
