| On Saturday 22 October 2011, the Social Committee and the Carnival Committee hosted a crab social at the firehouse. The annual fall event has been a social occasion for the department members and their family for several years.
This year, the event was expanded to invite some of our community members. Those members consisted of the workers who help us out at our annual carnival. We appreciate their dedication and willingness to come out and support the department with such a big event. Their support provides us with the extra hands needed to man our carnival stands.
The weather was beautiful and the food was abundant. Steamed crabs provided the venue for a relaxing and social gathering. For those who did not care for those tasty crustaceans, a buffet of hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, pizza and the trimmings was available as well. As is RVFD custom, no one walked away hungry.
Carnival chairman Mike Ridgell presented 10-year awards to community members present who have supported the carnival for that many years. The recipients were Christy Merrill and Joyce Ridgell. Those not present who have 10-years will receive their awards at a later time.
On a humorous note, member Snooky Raley was presented a gag gift which was a cup containing 4 pieces of candy corn. She had requested 4 pieces of the candy during setup of the feast and the committees made sure her wish was granted. Snooky took the joke like a trooper and the candy corn soon disappeared!
The committee members provided homemade brownies and cookies for dessert which were a perfect match for the soft-serve ice-cream. One last taste of summer was enjoyed by all.
The committee's wish to thank everyone for their hard work put towards the event. Most importantly, we wish to thank our community for their dedication and support. We look forward to working with you again next August during our 2012 Carnival season. |
