Firefighters Enhance Skills

By Firefighter / EMT-B David Morris
March 19, 2012

At 1800 hours, members loaded up on Engines 43 & 44, Rescue Engine 42, Tanker 4A, Jeep 4, Brush 4 and Utilities 4 and 4A and headed down to our training house off of Tennyson Lane in Scotland for our monthly drill.

The purpose of this drill was to go over how to attack a fire in a residential environment. Since the majority of our fires are in homes like the one we were drilling in, this served to be an invaluable tool to those members present. Crews were split up into two and threes, with about five crews present. After everything was set up, Chief 4B (Mercure) and Safety 4 (Raley) lit off the room. Engine 43 laid approximately 400' of 3" down the driveway, with Engine 44 picking it up. Crew 1 jumped off, pulled the initial attack line and proceeded inside.

While this was happening, Crew 2 (also on Engine 43) pulled the backup line and stood by outside. Crew 2 was relieved by Crew 3, who arrived on Engine 44, and then proceeded up the stairs with the initial attack crew. Once in the room, the attack crew batted back the fire and let it build back up. Doing this allows firefighters to view smoke layering and how the fire behaves and builds.

After a few evolutions, crews were rotated in and out, with the crews coming out going to rehab which was handled by Ambulance 497. After approximately an hour and a half of drilling, the fire was extinguished and crews wrapped everything up.

We'd like to thank Ridge VRS for providing a crew and ambulance to stand by.
