Just before 2300 hours last evening (24May), Calvert County Fire Services were alerted to a building fire in the 13800 block of HG Truman Road in Solomons (Solomons Veterinary Medical Center). First arriving units from Solomons VRS&FD found a one-story strip mall with heavy fire showing through the roof. A second alarm operation was immediately transmitted, dispatching multiple additional agencies from St. Mary’s, Charles, and Calvert for assistance. At approximately 2345 hours (24May), Engine 43 was added to the assignment. On arrival, Engine 43 staged, and the firefighters assisted with defensive operations, fire attack, water supply, and overhaul. An exterior attack was used with multiple engines and ladders operating. Units operated for several hours to bring the fire under control. At approximately 0055 hours (25May), Boat 4 was added to the assignment, however, due to overhaul operations, the Boat was placed in service shortly after arrival on the scene. Engine 43 remained on the scene assisting with overhaul efforts before returning to quarters at 0330 hours.

Several of the businesses in the strip were destroyed during the fire and the State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating. Firefighters were successful in rescuing two pets from Solomons Veterinary Medical Center. One firefighter was treated on the scene for dehydration and smoke inhalation. No other victims or injuries have been reported at this time. At this time the cause of the fire has not been determined. The business affected are Solomons Veterinary Medical Center, Patuxent Adventure Center, Vintage Treasures and Used Furniture, Tiki Tanning and Boutique, and HLW Electric.
