Holiday Travel Safety Tips

While the Southern Maryland roads aren’t expected to be snow-covered this holiday season, your travel destination may be different. Road safety is important. The biggest weather hazard during the winter months is icy, snow-covered, and wet roads, so you need to be prepared when traveling for the holidays. The best way to counter this hazard is to slow down. You want to do everything slower and lighter than you normally would. Hitting your gas pedal, slamming your brakes, or cranking your wheel too quickly is a surefire way to lose traction on an icy or wet road.

A little planning goes a long way. Be sure to check the weather forecast along your trip route. Visit Department of Transportation websites for the State(s) you’re visiting to access information about road conditions, including webcams.

An emergency kit is essential in case you become stranded. Check out the attached list of emergency supplies to make your own car emergency kit. Don't forget about your pets.

Be safe and have a happy holiday!
