| On Monday, October 20th, members of the Ridge VFD participated in our October training drill focused on Air Consumption and Management, emphasizing the importance of understanding and controlling air usage during firefighting operations.
The evening began with a presentation covering key aspects of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) operation, including air capacity, supply and regulation, air consumption rates, and low-air alarm functions. Members also reviewed several air management and breathing techniques—such as box breathing, skip breathing, belly breathing, and the Reilly Emergency Breathing Technique (R-EBT)—all designed to help firefighters conserve air and maintain control in high-stress environments.
Following the presentation, members participated in a hands-on exercise: SCBA Dodgeball. This interactive drill served as a dynamic air consumption challenge, allowing firefighters to experience firsthand how much air they use over a set period. Factors such as the type of SCBA cylinder, bypass valve settings, and individual exertion levels all influenced air usage.
The purpose of the exercise was to give firefighters a better mental and physical understanding of their personal air consumption patterns before their low-air alarm activates. By moving through quick, athletic motions—running, squatting, bending, and reaching—while fully geared up, participants were able to simulate real firefighting conditions and develop valuable muscle memory related to air management. Through this engaging and informative drill, Ridge VFD members strengthened their ability to manage air effectively under pressure—an essential skill for safety, endurance, and operational efficiency on the fireground. |
