| On 10/6, the Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, along with the Ridge Elementary School and Principal Sandra Kerner held a fire drill. The Ridge Volunteers utilized Engine 43 and Car 4 for this drill. Car 4 was first on scene at 1030 with Chief Francis Raley and Firefighter George Franklin. As Engine 43 neared the American Legion near the school, Engineer Bradley Cooper wound up the Q and gave the kids a sound of the airhorn.
Once on scene, Firefighter Morris and OIC Cooper pulled a trash line off of Engine 43 and proceeded to the rear of the school, where the kids were watching attentively near the tree line. After given the all clear by the Chief, the kids went back to class and were greeted with a firefighter at each door. On the way in, the children at the rear door were allowed to feel the firefighters glove so they can know if they ever get trapped in a fire, and feel that certain material, it could be a firefighter. The firefighters stood by until all the kids finally got in the school safely. All units were back in quarters at 1100.
The fire drill proved to be an exciting time for children, teachers and even by-standers alike. The children were out of the school in a timely and safe fashion, and enjoyed the interaction with the firefighters. The drill was done in accordance with Fire Prevention Week 2008, which began on 10/5 and goes through 10/11. Don't forget to restudy and practice your escape plan in the event of a fire. |
